Why more tools won’t fix your leadership problems

There are two kinds of leadership challenges: skillset-based and mindset-based.

If you've ever read a book, downloaded a template, or attended a training - and still felt stuck - this video is for you.

In this #lockerroomchat I break down the real reason some leadership challenges linger… and why better tools won’t help until you address your mindset first.

  • [00:00:00] Let's talk about personal development for a second.

There's lots of reasons why improving yourself personally or improving your own personal performance is very challenging. But let me talk to you about one of the ones I see the most. When you're thinking about a challenge ahead of you, there are skillset based challenges and then there's mindset based challenges.

You can think of a skillset based challenge as something that is solved by a framework or a model or a book.

Think about something like project management. There's a million frameworks, there's lots of different templates, there's gantt charts, there's things you can download, right? So if you're not sure how to manage a project, there's lots and lots of resources at your fingertips that you can utilize.

Here's the other one that I see more often that gets in the way of people improving themselves. It is mindset based challenges. Think of this as something that can't only be solved with a framework. So a perfect example is time management. There's a million books out there. I keep hearing the hot trend of time blocking. There's a million ways you can manage your time. If there was one perfect silver bullet, we'd all be incredible at managing our time.

But the reality is, we all have our own individual barriers to managing time [00:01:00] well.

So here's where I see this get in the way. Is when people try to solve something that is A barrier of their own mindset with a tool.

I see this a ton with leaders when they're trying to hold their teams more accountable, give better feedback, be more clear with their teams about expectations.

If it were as easy as a framework I could give you, everyone I work with would be good at this, like that. But I can tell you we've all got our own personal barriers to these things. Back when I used to lead other leaders my own barrier to giving really clear feedback was that I was scared that people wouldn't like me. It took me a while to get over it, and then I realized that the more clear I was with my feedback, the more people actually liked me as their boss. Everybody's got their own journey to go on when it comes to overcoming those barriers.

But first you have to recognize that it is a barrier. So I'd love to hear what is something that is more of a mindset challenge or barrier that you've been trying to solve only with skill sets.
